Memorial services celebrating the life of Samuel Powell, Jr. will be held on Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at 11:00 AM in the First A.M.E. Church of Palm Coast, 91 Old Kings Road N., Palm Coast. Samuel Powell, Jr. peacefully departed this life on Wednesday, October 13, 2010 in his home.
He was the only son of five children born to Samuel Sr. and Grace Fonville Powell on May 9, 1929 in Harlem, NY. Sam dedicated his life to Christ at an early age. He attended United Baptist Church in St. Albans NY. He was educated by the New York City School System and after 30 years of service he retired from the New York City Transit Authority as a Railroad Signal Specialist.
He and his wife Nancy, relocated to Palm Coast, FL in 1991 where they became dedicated members of the First AME Church of Palm Coast. Sam became very active in the community and church. He was President of the African American Caribbean Heritage Organization (AACHO) and was President of the NYC Transit Retirees Chapter 2. He became a member of Cards n Such, African American Cultural Society (AACS) NAACP, First AME Bible Study and Men's Choir.
He leaves to mourn his passing his lovely wife Nancy; sister, Julia Reid of Westbury, NY; brother-in-law, Alfred Johnson of Westbury, NY; daughter, Madeline Avila (Anthony); grandchildren, Madeline and Antoinette of Stone Mountain, GA; son, Lawrence Powell (Jeanine); grandchildren, Karlin, Randall, Troy of Buena Park CA; son, (the late) Gerald Powell, In-sok, In-son, of Westbury NY; stepson, (the late) James E. Hayes; grandchildren, DeAnne of Atlanta, GA, and Monique of Miami, FL; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the First A.M.E. Church of Palm Coast or Odyssey Hospital.
Arrangements are in the care and trust of Craig-Flagler Palms Funeral Home.
