Fred Rhodes; noted educator and former superintendent

Educator Fred S. Rhodes died Feb. 13. Formerly of West Caldwell, the Palm Coast Fla., resident was 54.
Mr. Rhodes, who had served as schools superintendent in Hanover Township, was a graduate of New York University and received a masters degree in 1960 from Rutgers University.
After serving in the Navy from 1952 to 1956, he taught in the Franklin Township school system and was a professor at Hunter College, New York City, and Glassboro State College. He was principal of Jefferson School in the Caldwell-West Caldwell school system from 1963 to 1966.
Mr. Rhodes served as director of student teaching and placement at William Paterson College from 1967 top 1968.
He was principal of Roosevelt Elementary School, Englewood, from 1968 to 1971. He then became superintendent of schools in Hanover Township, a post he held until retiring in 1986.
During his career, he was also affiliated with Kean College and Jersey City State College.
Mr. Rhodes was the first director of the Migrant Education Project of Southern New Jersey. Sponsored by the National Council of Churches, the project taught reading to children of migrant workers and was later adopted by the state Department of Education.
He had been a life member of the National Education Association, but resigned in protest in the mid-1960s, when the NEA refused to expel southern state chapters that denied membership to black teachers.
Surviving are his wife Barbara; a son, Scott of New York City; a daughter, Loren Chasalow of Succasunna; his mother, Lillyan Vernon of Hollywood, Fla.; a sister, Elaine Grief of Palm Coast, and two grandchildren.
Arrangements were by Craig Funeral Home, Flagler Beach, Fla.
