Gerhard Schamp, 80, of Ormond Beach, FL died peacefully, January 1, 2013 at Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House in Palm Coast, after a valiant fight against cancer. Gerhard was born in Bochum, Germany on October 26, 1932 to Margaret (Lauterborn) and Gerhard Schamp.
He graduated from Regino-Gymnasium in Prum, Eifel in Germany and subsequently studied law and economics at Bonn University and in Lund, Sweden. Gerhard began his career in 1959 with Ford Werke in Cologne, Germany. He was sent to the United States for a one year training program where he met and married Sally Hummel, his wife of 52 years.
In 1967, he was proud to become a United States citizen. At the completion of the training program, Gerhard was hired by Ford International Division where he began a prosperous 34 year career with Ford Motor Company and Ford Tractor Division.
He held many interesting positions throughout his career including assignments in International Marketing, Ford Racing, and Central Product Planning. He went on to become Director of Brazilian Operations for Ford New Holland and Vice President of Parts Operations for FNH. His job took him and his family on several overseas assignments in Belgium, England, and Brazil.
In 1993, Gerhard and Sally retired in Ormond Beach, Florida. They continued to travel in Europe and North America and were always planning their next adventure. Gerhard was an avid reader, especially historical books, and bicyclist. He frequently rode 30 miles a day and competed in the Senior Olympics several times.
Gerhard is survived by his beloved wife, Sally (Hummel) Schamp; their sons, Michael Schamp, Gregory (Lori) Schamp, and Stephen (Leigh) Schamp; grandchildren, Jordan, Lindsay, and Ryan; sister, Margaret (Willie) Kirsch; sister-in-law, Patricia Abrahamson and several nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will be received Monday, January 7, 2013 from 9:00 am to 10:30 am at the Craig-Flagler Palms Funeral Home, 511 Old Kings Road South in Flagler Beach. A funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 at Santa Maria del Mar Catholic Church, 915 North Central Ave., in Flagler Beach.
