Sylvia Steinberg
Sylvia Steinberg, 93, of Palm Coast, passed away on Sunday, July 10, 2011 at her home, with her loving family at her side. She and her husband were among Palm Coast's first residents, settling in the town's sixth home in 1972 after leaving their previous residence in Teaneck, New Jersey.
As a young woman, Sylvia was a brilliant student, finishing high school at age 15, college at 18 and law school at 20. As a newly minted lawyer, she received the highest grade on a federal Civil Service exam, surpassing numerous judges and attorneys of long standing. She was denied a Civil Service appointment, however, on account of her gender. She and her husband went on to buy a small hardware store and turned it into what for many years was New Jersey's premier house wares store.
In her later years, she was an avid golfer, bridge player and gardener, as well as an imaginative cook and accomplished artist. In 1982 she scored a hole-in-one on the 17th hole at Palm Harbor golf course, and on Sept. 16, 1987 she was named golfer of the week by the Flagler Palm Coast News-Tribune for sinking a spectacular 145-yard five-wood shot on the 6th hole for an eagle!
Sylvia is survived by her husband of 70 years, Morris; her daughter Karen Scheuer of San Francisco, California; her son Robert and his wife Suzanne of Greenwich, Connecticut; her son Richard and his wife Lorraine of Columbia, Maryland; her son James and his wife Lynn of Rhinebeck, New York; her daughter Jane Davidson and her husband Penn of Palm Coast, Florida; 17 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
Interment was held at Flagler Palms Memorial Gardens.
