Charles H. Turner, attendee, lead trumpet player with Frank Sinatra from 1975 to 1984, died at his residence and home town, Bunnell, Florida on May 19, 2006.

A Florida State University student in the early 1950s, Charlie was a star in the School of Music. He was a member of the FSU Jazz Band (then called the Lab Band), Symphonic Band, Symphony and the Marching Chiefs. Charlie left for Las Vegas in the early 1960s and quickly became a lead trumpet player for Las Vegas shows, establishing a reputation as one of the great lead trumpet players of his time. He met and performed for numerous stars and many of the great arrangers of the day: Billy May, Nelson Riddle and Don Costa.

In 1974 Charlie started performing frequently with Frank Sinatra. In 1975, he became Frank Sinatra's lead trumpet player, traveling around the world performing with Sinatra in shows, on his record albums, and in his movies.

In the summer of 1981, Charlie went to Sinatra and asked if he could record the arrangements that were written specifically to feature him as a trumpet soloist. Sinatra agreed and said he would gladly conduct the band to back Charlie up. To have Sinatra as conductor was a supreme compliment.

In 1983, Charlie assembled a band of legendary musicians, along with arranger/leader Billy May to make his recording. On two of the arrangements, "Laura" and "Don't Worry 'Bout Me," Charlie not only played the solo part, but he played the lead trumpet part over the band to give another dimension to the recording. Playing lead trumpet was Charlie's favorite thing to do.

Charlie Turner had many interests. Among them were photography, tennis, fishing and breeding show dogs. His FSU friends, to whom he was always loyal, will remember him for his extraordinary trumpet playing and his sense of humor. (bahdea, bahdea, bahdea!)
