ORMOND BEACH - Reginald C. Upson, 90, of Ormond Beach, a general contractor and founder of Artcraft Homes Inc., died Sunday at Palm Gardens of Ocala.

Mr. Upson was born in Daytona Beach and was a lifetime resident of this area. He was a member of Highlands and Ormond Beach Presbyterian churches, where he was a former deacon and elder. He was also a past president of the Daytona Beach Homebuilders Association. He enjoyed offshore and river fishing, and trips to the beach.

Survivors include two daughters, Marianne Upson, Ocala, and Manette Metcalf, Castaic, Calif.; and three grandchildren.

Craig-Flagler Palms, Flagler Beach, is in charge.


UPSON, REGINALD C. - Reginald C. Upson, 90, a native Daytonian, died peacefully Sunday, Nov. 13, 2005, in Ocala. A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, at Flagler Palms Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until service time Saturday in the chapel of Craig-Flagler Palms Funeral Home, 511 Old Kings Road South, Flagler Beach.

His childhood years were spent in Flagler Beach on his family's homestead. As a youth, he worked in the turpentine fields and helped dredge the intracoastal waterway. After building boats for the Navy at Daytona Boatworks during World War II, he started a millwork shop in Holly Hill with his brothers.

He had learned the construction business from his father and later founded Artcraft Homes lnc., along­side his wife, Dorothy, who founded Artcraft Realty Inc. He was a past president of the Daytona Beach Homebuilder's Association, former deacon and elder of Highlands and Ormond Beach Presbyterian Church. When he wasn't working, he enjoyed trips to the beach and fishing on the river and offshore with family and friends.

He was married for 55 years to Dorothy Whatley Upson. He lovingly cared for her for 14 years after she suffered a stroke.

He had three children, Marianne Upson, Ocala, Manette Upson Metcalf, Castaic, Calif., Martin Evan Upson, who preceded him in death; and three grandchildren, Brian, Erin and Garrett Metcalf, California.
