Mary Cornelia Westerberg

Obituary of Mary Cornelia Westerberg

Mary Cornelia (Horton) Westerberg, 78, of Palm Coast, FL, passed away Friday, January 1, 2021. She was born in Goshen, NY, on March 11, 1942, to the late Raymond and Lois Horton. Mary lived with her family in Waterbury, CT for many years.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 40 years, Don Errol Westerberg, in 2001.

Mary is survived by her sister, Lois (Ernie) Lowerre, of Palm Coast, FL, and her daughters, Melodie-Beth (David) Carmical of Wesson, MS; Cheryl (Frank) Matulewicz, of Oviedo, FL; and Gail (Ronald) Stephenson of Madison, AL. Mary is also survived by her nephews, Raymond Frey of Palm Coast, FL, and George Frey, Jr. of Arveda, CO.

In 2008, Mary was blessed to find love for a second time with her “runnin’ mate,” Donald G. Taylor, of Greensburg, IN; he was by her side in the hours before she passed. Mary loved her family and was gifted with eight grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.

Mary was a strong and caring woman who enjoyed helping others. Second only to her family was her love of nursing. Mary earned her nursing degree while working and raising her children. Throughout her decades-long medical career, she worked her way through the ranks and was always willing to share her nursing knowledge. She also recognized the determination and dedication it took to choose a career in the medical field.

During her tenure as a Director of Nursing (“D.O.N.”), she received many accolades for her ability to lead by example. “She could have lightened her D.O.N. load by delegating more assignments to the nurses, but she didn’t. From working day and evening shift, she knew our shifts were filled to capacity without extra paperwork piled on us...It has been an honor to have her as my superior,” wrote one of her nurses. “Nurse Mary” will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Visitation will be from 11 AM until 12 PM on January 7, 2021 and will be immediately followed by a memorial service and entombment in the Mausoleum of Angels at Craig Flagler Palms Funeral Home & Flagler Memorial Gardens, 511 Old Kings Road South, Flagler Beach, FL 32136.
