Pfc. Versie L. Mitchell, 19-year-old Negro soldier from Bunnell, died January 19 in Burma from drowning, his parents, John and Clara Mitchell, have been informed by the war department in a telegram received by them.
Mitchell, who was inducted into the army in March of 1943, had served in North Africa before going to India and later to Burma, his mother said today.
He was born and reared in Flagler County, but went to Norfolk, Va., a short time before he was inducted into the army.
No other details were given in the telegram from the war department. It stated, however, that a letter would follow.

The aftermath of war is being experienced this week in Flagler County by two families, one white and one colored.
Cpl. Wesley L. Flowers, son of Mr. and Mrs. John C. Flowers of Flagler Beach is being returned from the European theatre, and will be buried in Atlanta, former home of the family.
Young Flowers had been interred temporarily in a battlefield cemetery in North Africa.
The other is Pfc. Versie Mitchell, colored, and son of Clara Mitchell of Bunnell. He lost his life in the China-India-Burma theatre. It is understood his body will be buried in Daytona Beach.

The body of Pfc. Versie Lee Mitchell, Negro soldier who lost his life in Burma during World War II, will be buried here at the new colored cemetery at 2 p.m. Sunday, his mother, Clara Mitchell, said today.
The body was returned to the United States a short time ago. It will arrive in Daytona Beach today.
