THE FLAGLER TRIBUNE
Bunnell, Florida
Thursday, October 27, 1932

John B. Johnston, 79 year-old pioneer of this section, died early Wednesday morning in the Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine, after an illness of several years.

Mr. Johnston moved to St. Johns County from Johnston Station, Georgia, the town now being named Ludowici, 55 years ago, the deceased's father and grandfather having been born and reared at that place. Mr. Johnston was identified in many phases of the development of St. Johns County before Flagler County was created in 1917, he having moved to what is now Flagler county 38 years ago.

He was a charter member of Ashley Masonic Lodge in St. Augustine for many years and became a charter member of Bunnell Lodge No. 200 when it came into existence. He was a member of the local Methodist Episcopal Church, South.

Mr. Johnston is survived by his widow, two sons, E. W. and I. L. Johnston; five daughters, Mrs. W. H. Deen, Mrs. J. E. Pellicer, Mrs. S. C. Bankston, Hattie Johnston, all of Bunnell and Mrs. O. H. Spencer of Orlando. A sister, Mrs. Lily Smiley of Fort Lauderdale, and 32 grandchildren also survive.

The body was prepared for burial by The Craig Funeral Home of St. Augustine and where the body lay in state until 10 o'clock this morning when the funeral service was held at Pellicer Creek cemetery, Rev. John B. Culpepper, Jr., pastor of Bunnell Methodist Church, delivering the funeral sermon. The burial service was in charge of the local Masonic Lodge, H. D. Gilmore of Daytona Beach, delivering the oration.

Mr. Johnston's burial marks the passing of another of the old pioneer citizens of this section, who carved a civilization form the virgin pine woods and hammocks of the state they love so well, striving always to promote the best interests of their home community.
