Rev. Joe H. McCullough, 88, of Palm Coast went to be with the Lord Monday, October 27, 2008. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Palm Coast.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 31, 2008 at the First Baptist Church of Palm Coast with Pastor Dennis Littleton officiating. Burial will follow in the Pellicer Creek Cemetery, near Hastings.

Memorial gifts may be sent to the First Baptist Church of Palm Coast (for the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering), 6050 Palm Coast Parkway NW, Palm Coast, FL 32137.

Masters Funeral Home of Palatka is in charge of arrangements.

"Joseph Henry McCullough -- Operating Mac's Grocery Market, in Hastings, Joseph Henry McCullough is one of the community’s leading business men and public-spirited citizens.

Mr. McCullough, son of Charles Henry and Cuba Mae (Doak) McCullough, was born May 25, 1920, in Hastings, Florida. His father was for years a farmer and cattleman in this area; he died in March, 1951. His mother resides in Hastings. The father was a native of Florida; the mother, of Tennessee.

Hastings public schools provided Joseph Henry McCullough's early formal education. Graduated from high school in 1939, he was employed by the Wylly’s Grocery Store and Market in that year. Continuing as an employee until June, 1948, he then purchased the store and proceeded to operate it as Mac's Grocery Market, the name that it bears today.

Highly successful in his business undertakings, Mr. McCullough also interests himself in a variety of civic and social affairs in Hastings and vicinity. He was a member of the Mount Olive Baptist Church, and served as its Sunday school superintendent for about five years. He was active in the Training Union and a director of the St. John's River Baptist Association, a body in which twenty-nine churches are represented. In April, 1951, he was ordained minister of the Baptist Church, and is now pastor of the Hollister Baptist Church. In July, 1940, Mr. McCullough's elected vice-president of the Hastings Rotary Club. He is now a past president of the club.

During World War II, Mr. McCullough served with the Coast Guard in the South Pacific area from 1942 to 1945, taking part in invasions of the Philippines and other Pacific islands with the rank of chief machinist’s mate.

Joseph Henry McCullough married, January 25, 1948, at the Palatka Heights Baptist Church, in Palatka, Florida. Mary Lou Frederick, daughter of Grover Cleveland and Olive May (Pearce) Frederick, of Palatka. They became parents of a son, Joseph Philip McCullough, born January 29, 1949, and a daughter, Brenda Sue, born October 28, 1950."
