FORMER CIVIC LEADER, JOHN NUGENT, 82, DIES
By Michael Reed, Staff Writer

John G. "Jack" Nugent was considered opinionated but honest when he served as chairman of the Flagler County Commission. Nugent, who died Wednesday at his Palm Coast home, will be missed, former colleagues said. He was 82.

Nugent served on various civic boards, including the Palm Coast Civic Association; where he served as president in the 1990s, and the Palm Coast Home Rule Committee. He was also involved with the Flagler County Taxpayers Association.

"He was a man who was very respected in this community," said Raleigh Stockton, president of the Palm Coast Civic Association.

Nugent tried to improve the quality of life in Palm Coast, Stockton said, adding that while he may have been opinionated, he was always honest.

Nugent was a county commissioner from 1992 to 1996. Nugent said he ran for the post to effect needed changes in the county.

"We are going to miss him and his opinions very much," Stockton said.

Flagler County Property Appraiser John Seay succeeded Nugent on the County Commission when Nugent stepped down. Seay said Nugent was a believer in good government, and he will be missed.

"He was a very intelligent guy that had a way of expressing himself with humor," Seays said.

Nugent moved to Florida in 1989 from Breezy Point, N.Y. He was a national accounts manager for Clark Equipment Co. for 30 years before he retired in 1982.

He was also a sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.

He was an avid reader and enjoyed fishing.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jane, and two sons, John, Mahwah, N.J., and Frank, Brooklyn, N.Y.; two daughters, Mary Ferrari, Kings Park, N.Y., and Ilene Leodler, Macungie, Pa.; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
