CADE, ELEANOR "MAE" NEWMAN - Eleanor "Mae" Newman Cade, born Aug. 13, 1913, to Captain William J. Newman and Ruth Varnes Newman, died March 2, 2004.

A daughter of a tugboat captain on the St. Johns, she became her father's first mate and "cabin boy" riding with her father on the river. She and her sister, Myrtle, were very close and we often refer to them as "Tom Sawyer" and "Huckleberry Finn."

Mae's mother, Ruth, died when Mae was quite young and her father remarried and gave them three more siblings they loved very much, J.D., Lola and Joy.

Later Mae met and married George V. Cade, Seville, and had two children whom she loved very much; teaching them to work in the ferneries and citrus groves they owned. She was able to realize her dream of becoming a nurse, graduating from the Mary Karl Vocational School in Daytona Beach as an L.P.N.

For 15 plus years, she worked at Halifax District Hospital when she had to retire to care for her husband who was ill until he passed away in June of 1978. Following his death, she continued to work hard in their citrus groves and ferneries until about age 85 when she was no longer able to work.

Mrs. Cade was a member of Seville Trinity United Methodist Church and active in the Woman's Society of Christian Service; she was a Sunday school teacher and youth group leader.

Survivors include her daughter, Eleanor (David) Bland, Green Cove Springs; son, John V. (Andrea) Cade, Seville; grandchild, Jeff (Renee), Terry (Dixie) and Holly Graham, Michael (Tammy) Cade and Sonya Cade Jones; greatgrandchildren, Dillon, Austin and Collin Graham, Rebecca Graham, Rachel Phillips, Nathaniel and Sarah Manning, Paige and Jill Jones, Gage and Daven Cade; sisters, Myrtle Hollingsworth Modlin, Crescent City, and Joy Mullis, East Palatka; and sister-in-law, Ruby Cade, Seville.

Many thanks to Betty Winslow of DeLand who helped care for her at the end.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, March 6, at Seville Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. Cathy Felber officiating. Burial will follow at Seville Cemetery. The family will receive guests for visitation from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday, March 5, at the Clayton Frank & Biggs Funeral Home.
