NEWBERRY, Fla. — Dewey Eugene Carroll, 78, died Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004, at his home in Newberry, Fla., following an extended illness.
Born in Monterey, Tenn., he was raised in Chattanooga. Following his graduation from Chattanooga High School, he joined the Navy V-12 and ROTC program. Sea duty followed in 1946 in the Pacific and Caribbean. Following World War II, he earned a B.A. degree in history in 1949 from the University of Chattanooga. He was recalled to active duty in the Navy from 1950 to 1953, serving with the amphibious units in the Arctic, North Atlantic, Caribbean and North Africa.
Following his active naval service, he went to graduate school at Emory University and the University of Illinois earning a M.S. and Ph.D. in library science. While at Emory, he married Betty Ann and started his family. His professional activities have included reference librarian in the Atlanta Public Library, assistant professor of librarianship at Emory, assistant professor of information science at Georgia Tech, associate professor in the Graduate School of Library Science at the University of Illinois, and director of libraries and professor at the University of Chattanooga. After 25 years at the University of North Texas School of Library and Information Sciences, he was granted the status of professor and dean emeritus. In recent years they lived part time in Gainesville, Fla. He was a member of St. David’s Episcopal Church in Denton.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Weaver and Ivor Carroll; and brother, James Charles Carroll.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Ann Carroll of Newberry, Fla., and Denton; two sons, Paul Eugene (Patricia) Carroll of Aiken, S.C., Bruce Frederick (Pamela) Carroll of Newberry, Fla.; five grandchildren; a niece and a nephew.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004, at the Seville Methodist Church with Fr. John DiLeo officiating. Burial will follow at Seville Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, 2004, at the funeral home.
