German Melan

German Horacio Melán Pineda, affectionately known as “el mono” has gone fishing. On November 19, 2022, German took his last trip beyond the stars, the voice of his Creator called him to His eternal rest. His memory will remain forever engraved in the heart of his wife, children, grandchildren, mother, extended family, community of faith, and friends. For those of us who knew him, German will always be remembered as a great son, brother, excellent husband and father, and in all things as a grandfather who loved to spoil his grandchildren. God, the Creator of his life, called him into his presence at the age of fifty-nine while he was in his beloved native land, his beloved Colombia.

German along with his wife and three small children arrived in the state of Florida in the year 2003 after living in New York for almost twenty years. German arrived in New York in the year 1984, where he met who would become his beloved wife, Sonia Melan, with whom after more than two years of courtship decided to marry.

Very soon, Sonia and German, el mono y la mona, became the happy parents of German David (Leslie Melan), Stephanie Ibeth (Jose Martinez), and Jonathan Steve (Maya Melan). Their sons and daughter brought them much joy and blessings in their lives. And to complete the joy in his family, even more, God blessed them with six beautiful grandchildren, whom German came to love very deeply. Isaiah John, 10, José Elías, 10, Anthonie Gabriel, 6, Rosalie Naomi, 4, Isabella Marie, 4, and Anabella Angel, 3. German was very much blessed to have as his parents, Mrs. María Consuelo Pineda Melán and Mr. Carlos Gabriel Melán (1935- 2019). His life was also a blessing for his siblings, Carlos Mario, Patricia Elena, Hilda Nury and Olga Lucia.

With his charisma and a good sense of humor, German was always the heart of the party, his joy was contagious, and a unique personality. His missionary heart, his faith, and love for the Lord led him to cross borders. In Cuba and the Dominican Republic, and even in Israel, German shared his faith and hope in his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. With his testimony as a faithful follower of Jesus, he touched the lives of many, leaving today his testimony and conversion to the gospel of Jesus Christ as a legacy in the life of his children, grandchildren, and community of faith.

Germán not only loved fishing but also being a fisher of souls. He loved life and enjoyed life visiting twenty countries. During his adventures, he swam in the Atlantic, the Pacific, the Caribbean waters, and the Mediterranean, the dead sea, and as his last immersion, he renewed his baptismal covenant in the waters of the Jordan River. Together with their adventure partner, they enjoyed 37 years of romance, ups, and downs like any family, however, the key ingredient was their unity, they stayed together as a family, and together they learned to navigate the storms of their daily living and struggles of their everyday life. God was and continues to be their faithful companion in all their journeys, they were more than conquerors. Today German walks alongside his Creator and who knows, maybe even with a fishing rod on his shoulders.

To honor his memory and celebrate his existence, his family and friends will gather at the church where German served the Lord, La Primera Iglesia Bautista Hispana de Palm Coast. Memorial service time is at 11:00 am on Saturday, December 3, 2022. Immediately after the service, we will depart to Seville cemetery where his body will be laid to rest.
