Mary Elizabeth Mayfield Swanson Obituary

Mary Elizabeth Mayfield Swanson, 88, died Thursday, February 7, 2019 in DeLand.

Mrs. Swan-son was a Vice-President of Barnett Bank of Crescent City (formerly Flagship and Peoples), Putnam County, and office manager for Fern Trust in Seville, Volusia County. She served as president of the Democratic Women's Society of Melbourne, Florida, during which time she was invited to President Kennedy's inaugural ball.

She was honored in Who's Who Among American Business Women. She loved horses and was an accomplished horsewoman. Neighbors knew her for rescuing wild animals and welcoming kids to have a meal whenever they stopped by.

Born February 10, 1930 and raised in Pierson, Florida, Mary lived in Washington DC, Kawailoa Beach in Oahu, Hawaii, Mobile, Alabama, and Eau Gallie, Florida, as her husband served first in the Navy and worked in the space program at Cape Canaveral, before moving with her family to Crescent City to be near her parents in 1967.

She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Stanley E. Swanson; daughters, Carolyn (Mike) Thomas, Sarah (Wade) Kane, Anna Swanson, Chau Do (Duong Nguyen), and Mary K Swanson (David Raistrick), and by her grandchildren: Mary, Greg, Lauren, Mike, Kristin, Vinh, Kim, Alissa, and John; and by nine great-grandchildren: Isabel, Elizabeth, James, Zak, Mackenzie, Madison, Marion, Violet and Bella.

She was preceded in death by grandson Douglas and her parents, Ethyle and John Caldwell Mayfield.

Graveside services were held at 2:00 PM, Monday, February 11, 2019 in Seville Cemetery with Pastor Howard Cox officiating.

Arrangements were under the direction of Clayton Frank & Biggs Funeral Home, Crescent City, Florida.
