Ruth Carolyn Clegg Townsend passed away on Thursday, February 7. She was 89 years of age. She was born in Flagler County on January 13, 1924, at the home of her parents, and was a resident there all of her life.

She attended Bunnell High School, and was a member of the Bunnell Bulldogs Marching Band. She obtained her Bachelor of Science Degree in Home Economics at Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Florida, and taught Home Economics at Bunnell High School for several years. She then taught fourth and sixth grades in Flagler County for many years until her retirement.

Following her retirement, Ruth purchased The Craft Gallery in Bunnell, and enjoyed meeting many people and teaching crafts, needlework and sewing to adults and children in the area. Ruth was also known in the community as an excellent seamstress, making many bridal, bridesmaid, prom dresses and other clothing for family and friends in the area.

Ruth was a member of First United Methodist Church of Bunnell, where she sang in the choir for many years. She also enjoyed gardening and playing the piano.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James W. (Jim)Townsend, Sr.

Surviving her are her children, Carol Lynda Emery, Bunnell, and James W. Townsend, Jr. (Jay), of Ft. Pierce, and her son-in-law, Quentin Emery of Bunnell. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Leah (Mark) Somers, Carrie DiMillo, and Ryan (Audra) Emery of Bunnell; Erin (Jason) Elixson of Providence, Florida; Eric (Aimee)Townsend and Wilson Townsend of Ft. Pierce. She is also survived by nineteen great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 15, at 11:00 a.m. at the cemetery in Seville, Florida at 207 Cemetery Road.
