Salvatore (Sam) Abate, 100, of Flagler Beach, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 8, 2010 at Florida Hospital surrounded by his family. Sam, one of nine children, was born on September 9, 1909 in Melrose Park, IL to the late Mario and Rosina (Bonfanti) Abate.

He worked as a Supervising Engineer for Illinois Bell retiring after 43 years. Sam was a member of Santa Maria del Mar Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, where he was a 4th Degree Knight. He was an avid card player, enjoyed playing chess, and golfing was his passion. Sam was a very optimistic person and was known for his sharp sense of humor. He moved to Flagler Beach in 1974, coming from Oak Park, IL.

Survivors include his six children: Mario Abate and his wife Rita of Ponte Vedra, FL; Joseph Abate and his wife Martini of Cynthiana, KY; Leonard Abate and his wife Sally of Live Oak, FL; Roselyn Francisco and her husband Alan of Flagler Beach; Carmelyn Mazanec and her husband Daniel of Flagler Beach; and Charles Abate and his wife Gail of Cotati, CA; his brother, Joseph Abate of New Jersey; his 20 grandchildren; and his 31 great-grandchildren.

Sam was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Josephine, after 70 years of marriage.

Funeral Mass celebrating the life of Salvatore P. Abate will be held on Wednesday, June 16, 2010 at 11:00am at the Santa Maria del Mar Catholic Church, 915 N. Central Ave., Flagler Beach. Inurnment will follow the Mass at St. Mary Cemetery, Korona, FL.

Memorial donations may be made in memory of Salvatore to the C.H.A.S. (Community Homes and Services ) P.O. Box 744, Novato, CA 94948. Arrangements are in the care and trust of Craig-Flagler Palms Funeral Home.
