SCHATZ, JERRALD D. "JERRY" - Community activist Jerrald D. "Jerry" Schatz, 70, North Oceanshore Boulevard, in The Hammock, passed away Monday, June 27, 2005, at Florida Hospital Flagler.
Jerry was born March 13, 1935, in Birmingham, Ala., to Robert D. and Lilah (Richardson) Schatz. He moved to this area in 1950 from Birmingham. He worked as an electrician at Leigh Portland Cement Co. in Flagler Beach until it closed. Later, he was part owner of DHS Sales, where he was a sporting goods manufacturer's representative. He retired from the business in 2003.
Jerry was passionate about protecting Flagler County from rampant development and in particular the Hammock area. When ITT Community Development Corp. proposed to develop five and a half miles of beachfront property in the unincorporated community in Flagler County, he formed the Friends of the Barrier Island, an environmental group that worked to protect the area. Through his tireless efforts many residents of the Hammock were provided affordable water service, drainage of the area was improved, and additional beachfront parklands were set aside. He was featured in Florida Trend and several other publications for his efforts to save the area from development. He was a musician, and he enjoyed playing the bass and guitar.
He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Dolores Schatz, The Hammock. Additional survivors include his daughter, Lorraine Herrick of The Hammock; his mother, Lilah Schatz, Flagler Beach; mother-in-law, Ann Novak, The Hammock; sister, Margie Guthrie, The Hammock; his three brothers, Fred, Powder Springs, Ga.; Doug, Oak Hill, and Ed, The Hammock; and his dear granddaughter, Jazmin Herrick, The Hammock.
Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, June 30, at the Craig-Flagler Palms Funeral Home, 511 Old Kings Rd. South, Flagler Beach.
