A funeral mass for Virginia S. Smigielski, 93, of Bunnell will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 6, 2016, 11:00AM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. Virginia passed away on April 1, 2016 at Florida Hospital Flagler.
She was born on June 30, 1922 in St. Rose, IL to the late Herman J. Schrage and Verena M. Holtgrave. As a young woman she was a model, actress, and TV producer and was featured in commercials and television shows while residing in South Florida.
Virginia was a deeply religious woman and professed as a Lay Carmelite in the Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Her religious name was “Sister Mary Gabrielle.” She served as the director for the local order for many years. She and her husband were among the initial supporters of the Carmelite Monastery in Korona, residing on adjoining properties.
Virginia was a vivacious and youthful woman who learned to use the computer at the age of 72 and was very well-versed in the use of her iPad in her 90’s.
She was preceded in death by her first husband of 50 years, Frankie Watson, in 1989, and her daughter, Carol Watson, in 1992.
Survivors include her husband of 22 years, Daniel Smigielski; daughters, Barbara and her husband Melvyn Maloney of Bunnell; Susan and her husband Robert Levine of Tampa; sister, Stella Hollenkamp of Salem, IL; grandchildren, David Maloney, Diane Santopadre, Jill Hechtman, Karen Mallin, Shana Levine, and Jonah Levine; great-grandchildren, Ashley Santopadre, Geoffrey Santopadre, Jeremy Santopadre, Tyler Maloney, Sadie Maier, Josephine Maier, Emma Hechtman, Benjamin Mallin, and Jacob Mallin.
Donations in her memory may be made to the St. Joseph’s Carmelite Monastery, 141 Carmelite Drive, Bunnell, FL. 32110. Arrangements are in the care and trust of Craig-Flagler Palms.com
