He graduated from Bronx High School of Science, then went on to attend City University of New York and Columbia University from where he graduated in 1953 with a B.A. degree in Pharmacy. Carl was one of the pioneer African Americans to open his pharmacy in Harlem, N.Y., and later in Brooklyn, NY. After a number of years, Carl gave up his business and went to the U.S. Virgin Islands where he worked for approximately a year. He returned to the U.S. and eventually went to work at Brooklyn Hospital where he remained until his retirement in 1990.

In 1970 at the home of a mutual friend, Carl met a charming young woman he had met in his teen years. Her name was Gloria Carmen Levy. After a short courtship, they were a happy duo spending much of their time traveling and enjoying time spent with family and friends. Carlton Brown was a true renaissance man with the love and interest in many diverse areas from being a sports, swimming and music enthusiast to studying Japanese. He was a certified scuba diver, participated in a senior triathlon and did some modeling for professional publications.

He was a long time member of the St. Thomas Episcopal Church, the North East Florida Jazz Association, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and a supporter of the African American Cultural Society. He volunteered at Flagler Hospital, The Council on Aging, and Meals-On- Wheels Program. One of his pride and joys was his National Geographic Magazine collection going back to the mid 1970’s. Carl will be remembered for his easy going likable personality. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria Brown, family members, Carol Whitter, Roxane Thomas, Stephen Whitter, wife Lisa, daughters, Alena and Janine Richardson, her husband Leighton and daughter, Briana. He is also survived by his in-laws; Jeanette Cancryn and Dorothy Evans and families.
